RAINN: 1-800-656-HOPE

"One year ago, I locked my door and went to sleep; like we all do on any given night. Unfortunately, this night was like no other before and was one I will never be able to forget. I woke up that night to a co-worker who had undressed himself, crawled into my bed and raped me. "

Depression

The psychological and emotional strain that rape puts on victims may lead to depression. Early symptoms of depression in rape and sexual abuse survivors may go unnoticed or be attributed to a normal period of re-adjustment following the attack. However if the symptoms persist, it is advisable to seek professional help. The recommended treatment may vary depending on the severity of depression and the degree of functional impairment.

Symptoms of depression include:

Just like sexual violence, depression can target anyone regardless of age, race, nationality, gender, religion or sexual orientation. Victims of rape, sexual abuse, and sexual assault are included in one of the highest percentages of people who at some time do experience some form of depression.

Depression is a serious condition, and while recovery is possible, depression is not something that can be easily overcome by trying to think in a positive way. Asking someone to "snap out" of depression makes as much sense as asking someone to "snap out" of a heart attack. It takes time for the victims to overcome their depression and they should never be asked to move at a faster pace than they are ready or comfortable to.
